Infant Care Q&A

What is infant care?

Infant care begins just days after your child is born. If your child shows no signs of illness, your visits will fall under the umbrella of well-baby examinations.

Dr. Oparaugo will check your baby’s weight, length, and head circumference. Those measurements show how your baby is developing, and create a growth pattern over time. Dr. Oparaugo also performs a basic examination, including:

  • Eyes
  • Ears
  • Mouth
  • Heart and lung function
  • Limbs
  • Genitalia
  • Skin

Which developmental markers are checked?

You should have frequent well-baby appointments during your child’s first year. During later visits, Dr. Oparaugo will check for the following developmental markers:

  • Control of head
  • Reaching for objects
  • Imitating sounds or facial expressions
  • Attempts to roll over
  • Ability to sit up unsupported
  • Using fingers to grasp objects

Some babies need appointments more frequently. Dr. Oparaugo may suggest additional check-ups if your little one shows signs of illness or developmental delay. Of course, you should always call the office if you sense that something seems unusual or simply doesn’t seem right.

How can I prepare for infant care appointments?

The best way for parents to prepare for well-baby exams is to make a list of questions or concerns. It’s easy to forget things, and having a written list is helpful.

You’ll be asked about your baby’s habits concerning feeding, sleep, diaper changes, activity level, and more. The answers you provide will help Dr. Oparaugo care for your child and suggest ways to ease any challenges you’re facing.

Some parents find it helpful to have a second adult present during these exams. A second set of hands can help keep your baby happily occupied while you speak with Dr. Oparaugo.

When are vaccinations administered?

Vaccinations play an essential role in infant care. Dr. Oparaugo will explain the vaccination schedule that can provide your infant with a lifetime of protection from certain diseases.

Vaccinations have a well-established history of being safe and effective. But recently, a great deal of misinformation about vaccinations has spread. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding the vaccines or immunization schedule during your visits.

Vaccination shots aren't a pleasant experience for infants. Be ready to hold your infant while the shots are administered, and to soothe him or her afterward. And keep in mind, the momentary discomfort is well worth a lifetime of disease immunity.
